By October, the excitement of the new school year has settled and everyday classroom routines are firmly established. For supply teachers, this can be an excellent time to secure regular work—but it can also bring new challenges.
Pupils know their routines and may notice immediately when something feels different. Teachers are managing growing workloads, the weather is changing and everyone is counting down to half-term. A calm, confident supply teacher can make an enormous difference.
Here are some practical ways to strengthen your classroom confidence and provide valuable support this autumn.
Follow Familiar Routines
The quickest way to create stability is to follow the class routine as closely as possible. Look for the timetable, seating plan, reward system and classroom rules before the lesson begins. If something is unclear, ask a nearby teacher or teaching assistant.
Using familiar instructions and transitions reassures pupils that the same expectations still apply. It also reduces the time spent negotiating new rules, allowing you to concentrate on teaching.
Learn and Use Pupils’ Names
Using names helps build rapport and makes behaviour management more effective. Keep the seating plan nearby and use it during questioning, praise and redirection.
Do not worry if you cannot remember every name immediately. Making a visible effort still shows pupils that you see them as individuals and are interested in their learning.
Make Instructions Short and Specific
Long explanations can create confusion, particularly when you are new to a class. Break instructions into manageable steps and check that pupils understand before they begin.
Instead of giving five directions at once, explain the first task, allow pupils to complete it and then move on. Write key instructions on the board where possible. This supports the whole class and can be especially helpful for pupils with additional learning needs.
Use Positive Behaviour Management
Positive recognition can quickly shape the atmosphere in a classroom. Notice pupils who are ready, listening or helping others and describe the behaviour you want to see.
For example, saying, “Thank you to this table for having books open and being ready to begin,” gives the rest of the class a clear model to follow.
Continue to use the school’s behaviour policy when correction is required. Be consistent, avoid public arguments and give pupils a clear opportunity to make a better choice.
Keep a Flexible Activity Ready
Even with detailed lesson plans, it helps to have a short activity that can be adapted to different ages and subjects. Useful options include:
- A vocabulary challenge connected to the lesson
- A five-question retrieval quiz
- A short creative-writing prompt
- A paired discussion followed by class feedback
- An exit question summarising the day’s learning
These activities are useful when pupils finish early, technology fails or a planned transition takes longer than expected.
Work with the Teaching Assistants Around You
Teaching assistants often know the pupils, routines and learning needs extremely well. Introduce yourself, share the lesson plan and ask whether there is anything important you need to understand before teaching begins.
Treating support staff as professional partners creates a more consistent classroom experience. It also helps you respond appropriately to pupils who require additional support.
Look After Your Own Energy
Autumn can be a demanding term. Darker mornings, changing weather and busy journeys across London can all affect energy levels.
Prepare what you can the night before, carry water and a practical lunch, and build some recovery time into your week. One of the advantages of supply teaching is flexibility, so think carefully about the schedule that allows you to remain enthusiastic and effective.
Turn a Positive Day into Another Booking
Before leaving, return resources, tidy the teaching space and provide a clear handover. Thank the office team and let your Red Box Teachers consultant know how the placement went.
Schools are more likely to request supply teachers who are reliable, adaptable and easy to work with. Consistently handling the small details well can help one successful booking develop into regular work.
