Frequently Asked Questions

Discover the answer to some frequently asked questions about working as a Key Stage One teacher, including skills and qualifications.

A KS1 teacher oversees the care of children between the ages of 5 and 7 in maintained schools in England and Wales, referred to as ‘Year 1’ and ‘Year 2’. KS1 normally covers children in infant school, although in some cases this may fall under their primary school years.

It is the teacher’s responsibility to provide effective teaching to designated pupils, as well as pastoral care and general teaching duties in the absence of their regular class teacher.

To be eligible for a standard supply job, you need to have Qualified Teacher Status (QTS), but there are also opportunities for non-qualified teachers. You can work in secondary schools as a cover supervisor, but you’ll need a degree, or at least be on your way to getting one, and be dedicated to becoming a teacher.
